Optimus Ships Superheater

July 2011

The project also included several large Economizers. All three units shipped on time for a July 2011 delivery.

Optimus Engineered Products designs economizers, superheaters, and boilers for Sulfuric Acid Plants. These high-performance units are manufactured in our Chanute Manufacturing plant.

Economizers and superheaters for sulfuric acid plants have relatively unique requirements due primarily to the relatively high gas-side pressure and the potentially caustic environment. Superheaters may also operate at high temperatures which can present additional challenges when coupled with the casing's high design pressure. Often these superheaters must utilize stainless steel casing materials at temperatures that provide a very low allowable stress and make thermal expansion a design concern.

Optimus has been designing and manufacturing units for sulfuric acid plants since 1993 and has the necessary experience not only to design them, but to fabricate them with the highest standards of quality and workmanship. Plant operators want and depend on reliable equipment and Optimus/Chanute strives to provide the best in the industry. Because Chanute constantly fabricates tubular boiler equipment for the power and petrochemical industries, our ASME-certified pressure part welders are held to a higher standard of performance, and that workmanship goes into all of our products because we don't know any other way.

Chanute has unique manufacturing capabilities that the Optimus engineers take full advantage of when designing sulfuric acid plant economizers and superheaters. Often this allows the Optimus units to be configured for higher heat transfer efficiencies which results in a reduced surface area requirement and, consequently, a lower-priced product.

Chanute utilizes its on-site capabilities to fin and bend the tubes, machine and fabricate the headers, drill the tubesheets, cut and prep all casing materials, and perform all of the pressure part and casing welds. This gives Otimus/Chanute more control of the manufacturing sequence and schedule which has helped us achieve a remarkable record of on-time delivery performance.

Chanute's high bridge-crane hook-heigts and lifting capacity enables the plant to fabricate very large economizers and superheaters. The economizer pictured below was part of a combo-coil unit (4A/C) that transferred heat from 794,000 lbs/hr of 785°F gas into 521,000 lbs/hr of feedwater, raising it to the saturated steam temperature at 695 psi. In the picture, the inlet vestibule is being test fit to the economizer box.

At the same sulfuric acid plant, Optimus designed a cylindrical superheater to accommodate 1.088 million lbs/hr of 1150° gas to superheat 507,750 lbs/hr of steam. In the lower-right picture, the superheater's outlet vestibule is being test fit in the shop.
